The National Spiritual Assembly is pleased to share with you news of a service position that has opened up at the National Bahá’í Centre at 27 Rutland Gate in London. The position being advertised is for the role of Human Rights and Government Relations Officer. Please find below a short service description for this role.

Human Rights and Government Relations Officer

As part of a growing team of staff and volunteers working in the Office of Public Affairs, the Human Rights and Government Relations Officer to the Office would help in:

  • Research and drafting of briefing notes on the human rights situation of the Bahá’ís in Iran.
  • Research and drafting of correspondence to representatives of government, parliament and other institutions of civil society.
  • Attending meetings with representative of government, parliament and other institutions of civil society.
  • Attending debates, seminars and lectures in a number of spaces in UK government and civil society and to take concise and informative reports that will be of value to OPA in reading the reality of the wider human rights discourse.
  • Assisting in drafting reports, memoranda of evidence and parliamentary mechanisms, such as Parliamentary Questions, for use in defence of the Faith
  • Preparing reports for submission to the National Spiritual Assembly and other Bahá’í institutions.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks.
  • Assisting in event planning.

With this in mind, below are some skills and qualities that are useful for this work. Naturally, these would be developed and enhanced as we study and consult together and gain experience in the field:

  • A good understanding of the conceptual framework governing the current series of global Plans of the Faith and experience in applying its elements in the work of expansion and consolidation.
  • Willingness to consult on all matters and work enthusiastically, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and good attention to detail.
  • The ability to research and analyse information, general word processing skills and computer competence.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a diverse workload and to work calmly under pressure and with deadlines.
  • Tact and wisdom in representing the UK Bahá’í community in a range of spaces.
  • Humble posture of learning.
  • Some interest in and familiarity with concepts of human rights.

This is a part-time position, with the option of becoming full time if necessary. A salary is offered to enable the successful applicant carry out this service. As with all service to the Faith, there is also the opportunity to undertake it on a voluntary basis or part-voluntary basis. The initial service period is two-years, subject to review at the end of the period.
