Service opportunity in the Office of the Secretary

Owing to new developments in the work of the National Spiritual Assembly, we are looking to recruit an additional member to the Office of the Secretary, who will serve as its Coordinator. We would like to invite applications to fill this vacancy. The Coordinator will have responsibility for ensuring that the Office of the Secretary serves the UK Bahá’í community effectively in promoting and protecting the faith and the community. The position chiefly involves the following:

  • Manage and supervise staff in their responses to religious queries;
  • Consider more complex or serious religious enquiries and provide faith guidance and
    counselling on these enquiries themselves;
  • Coordinate the implementation of the decisions of the National Assembly as to matters of
    faith and matters of community;
  • Draft official correspondence for final approval by the National Spiritual Assembly with
    reference to religious texts, teaching and guidelines;
  • Prepare reports for the National Spiritual Assembly with the aim of promotion and
    protection of the faith.
  • Consider religious texts and teachings, as well as previous decisions of the Assembly to
    ensure consistency in approach to issues of faith.
  • Organise faith based activities and education in accordance with the decisions of the
    National Spiritual Assembly, such as the content for a programme for a residential summer school. In addition, coordinate community elections: an important tenet of the faith.

The requirements for the role are:

  • A sensitive manner and sympathetic heart in interacting with community members;
  • Deep knowledge of the religious texts, including the laws and teachings of the Bahá’í Faith, and their practical application, especially in relation to birth, marriage, death, pastoral care and administrative matters;
  • Excellent communication skills, with a careful eye for detail;
  • Experience of engaging with Bahá’ís and Bahá’í communities, analysing their needs and offering advice;
  • A sound understanding of, and experience of working within, the structure of the Bahá’í administration, preferably at the national or international levels;
  • A good grasp of the work of expansion and consolidation of the Bahá’í community, as well as its protection;
  • Good organizational skills, including the ability to plan, organise and prioritise a wide range of tasks;
  • Good written communication skills, with a careful eye for detail;
  • A sound understanding of the structure and functioning of the Administrative Order;
  • A good grasp of the work of the Five Year Plan;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook.

This is a full-time role, based at the National Ḥazíratu’l-Quds, and is offered initially as a three-year contract. The individual will be closely accompanied by other staff in the National Office as part of an induction period at the commencement of the term of service.

A salary (£32,000 – £40,000 per annum) is offered to enable successful applicants to carry out their service. As with all service to the Faith, there is also the opportunity to undertake it on a voluntary basis or part-voluntary basis.
