Association for Bahá’í Studies

A new Association for Bahá’í Studies Executive Committee has been appointed by the National Spiritual Assembly, which is tasked with the responsibility to cultivate an environment for all believers in the United Kingdom to contribute to the intellectual life of society. The members are Mrs. Khatereh Eghdamian, Mr. James Mohajer, and Mr. Iqan Shahidi.

In a letter dated 24 July 2013, the Universal House of Justice states that “every believer has the opportunity to examine the forces operating in society and introduce relevant aspects of the teachings within the discourses prevalent in whatever social space he or she is present.”

At present, there are a number of special interest groups across the UK exploring how to correlate the Teachings with wider discourses in society, including economics, religion, the arts, education, and law, among others.  Individuals from any field or profession are invited to join or start their own special interest groups.  If you wish to do so, or want to find out more about the ABS, you are encouraged to contact the Committee at abs@bahai.org.uk.

EBBF conference – Collaborative Business: How organisations and people can transform each other

The maturation of human society requires interdependence, in which self-interest gives way to shared interest and collaboration becomes more important than individual control.  Businesses and organisations can make a great contribution to this goal.

To discuss this further, an EBBF conference is taking place on Friday 27 September in London.  The aim of the conference—responding to the call of the Universal House of Justice for us to “participate in the discourses of society”—is to raise the consciousness of participants, inspiring and encouraging organisations and their employees to place values and principles at the centre of their policies and business management, thus contributing directly to the betterment of society.

Hosted by Omid Djalili, the keynote speakers include Nava Ashraf and Dan Makoski.

To keep abreast of EBBF and the conference, there is a Facebook page and an Eventbrite page for conference registration.

UN report: Bahá’ís of Iran suffer most egregious forms of persecution

In a new report to the United Nations General Assembly, Javaid Rehman—the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran—outlined a series of human rights violations against the Bahá’í community and other ethnic and religious minorities, and set out a number of recommendations to the Iranian authorities.  Read more, here >
